The Best Construction Toys for Boys aged 5 to 8 is the second in a series of posts regarding my favourite toys for boys.

Following on from Best Sports Toys, this post will highlight a selection of what I consider to be fantastic options as gifts for the little lad in your life. As a mum to two bright, bumbling boys, I thought I should use my knowledge, experience and research skills to put together this list of the best construction toys for boys aged 5 to 8.

Why Construction?

My boys LOVE construction! Anything from foam blocks to Lego, Magformers to KNex will keep them occupied for hours. Construction/Building toys like these are great for expanding their imagination and increasing their creativity, skills we parents are always happy to encourage in our children.

It also helps children to develop fine motor skills, follow instructions and improve on communication. Whether they play alone or with others, construction toys encourage both independent play and sharing.

Jigsaws

When considering the best construction toys for boys aged 5 to 8, we really need to begin with the good, old, reliable jigsaw. Jigsaws are one of the first basic constructing toys children learn to build with. They teach children to identify patterns and match colours, joining the pieces to form the final image shown on the box.

When our kids are young, we spend a lot of time focusing on fine motor skills. Hand eye coordination is a key milestone and jigsaws are a great way of developing this skill.

2D Jigsaws

Below are some great 2D Ravensburger Jigsaw puzzles. We have so many of these puzzles and, as much as I hate finding random pieces in random places, they are high quality, sturdy and great for keeping the boys occupied.

3D Jigsaws

How cool are 3D jigsaws? I love how they look but, I’ll be honest here, I wasn’t too sure how they work as an idea. Then Tink received this Space Mission one, pictured above. It all connects via little tabs and he was actually able to do the full thing himself. The box says age 5+ however, some children may need assistance. Tink was 6 when he completed it and, as a lover of Lego, he is very good at following instructions.

Overall, it was of a pretty sturdy quality for being made of cardboard. I’ve listed some of the options below, including his Space Jigsaw. These really are excellent construction toys for boys.

Blocks

Moving on from Jigsaws, we have a large variety of options when it comes to building materials. The first 2 listed below are aimed at younger children but I had to include them mainly because of the play value that goes along with.

Foam Blocks

Now, I know what you are thinking. Are foam blocks really the best construction toys for boys aged 5 to 8? Well no, they probably are not the best gift idea. Your boys will appreciate Lego a lot more. However, hear me out.

As a gift they are 100% perfect for a child of age 1 but, I guarantee that if that child has an older sibling, that sibling will help that child play with these blocks. I would be seriously surprised if they did not. Our pack is 8 years old now and still gets major play value. They are the one toy that has been played with consistently by all 3 boys and now my niece can get some enjoyment from them too. If you are looking for a gift for a 1 year old then invest in these. They will play with them for years after.

There are a lot of varying types and brands out there but they all follow the same concept. Consisting of many different shapes, sizes and colours, they allow children to construct architectural dreams. I honestly would recommend them to anyone and everyone who will listen.

Wooden Blocks

One step up from foam blocks are wooden blocks. Again, these are great for younger children however, as an outside toy they are perfect. We keep our set in the playhouse and Pup especially loves to build some wild and wonderful structures. Tink enjoys them too.

The ones we have are actually just a plain set of cuboids but Melissa & Doug do a coloured set as follows.

Lego

I have a love/hate relationship with Lego. I love to hate it. The boys have so much fun building and creating but, even though they do tidy up after themselves, for the most part, those little bricks get is some really random places. I’ve found them in the car, down the sofa, even in the washing machine. However, I do love the fact that they can play for hours. There are a lot of benefits. It teaches them how to follow directions and that feeling of accomplishment when they work to create something truly special.

There are so many different sets to choose from which make it fun for all the family and, this is clearly why Lego is one of the best construction toys for boys aged 5 to 8 and above. Its perfect for the big boys too.

I swear my husband buys Lego more for his benefit that my sons. Below are just a selection of what is available.

Magformers

Magformers are labelled as age 3+ however, there are some great sets out there which are perfect for a 5 year old. Pup still plays with his and uses them in conjunction with other things. They make great houses to go along the side of his Thomas track or, alternatively, a bridge.

Kids have such great imaginations and it is such a pleasure, as a parent, to see them branching out and finding different uses for some of their “younger” toys.

The set we have is just the simple squares and triangles however, you can now build other things such as vehicles. It really is such an inventive toy.

K’Nex

Lastly, we have K’Nex. I have fond memories of playing with this when my brother was little, helping him build a Ferris wheel in my gran’s conservatory. I didn’t often bond with my brother as a child so moments like these are definitely remembered. Construction toys like K’Nex and Lego are timeless. They never get old but only change and adapt with each passing year.

Now, even though some sets are age 6+, I would suggest that it is designed for children closer to age 8. Tink does still need help with some sections and, even even I find it fidgety at times. He can follow the instructions better than me though.

Below are some of the best sets out there, including the Ferris wheel. I actually was surprised you can still buy it. It’s been at least 20 years. See… Timeless!
